Will Mohanlal return as AMMA president?
The Hema Committee’s report on sexual abuse and harassment in the Malayalam film industry sparked significant changes, leading to mass resignations within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Among those stepping down was the association’s former president and prominent actor, Mohanlal. Now, months after these resignations, discussions are emerging about restructuring AMMA with newly elected members.
Union Minister Suresh Gopi recently confirmed to the media that AMMA is indeed moving toward reform. As he left the association’s office in Kochi, he encouraged fresh faces to step up and take responsibility. However, he chose not to comment on the series of resignations that involved many former committee members.
When asked if Mohanlal might return as AMMA’s president with the new committee, Suresh Gopi declined to respond, leaving the question unanswered. Currently, an ad hoc committee is temporarily managing AMMA’s operations until a more permanent structure is established.
Earlier, at a Kerala Cricket League event, Mohanlal spoke publicly for the first time about his decision to resign from AMMA. Addressing the media, he explained, “If you ask why we resigned from AMMA, it’s because the entire Malayalam film industry must be accountable. The report highlights several issues, not just one. You probably understand these matters as well as I do.”
Mohanlal’s resignation sparked a wave of reactions on social media. While some criticized him and questioned his awareness of the problems within the industry, others wanted to know his thoughts on the severe allegations of abuse and harassment that had surfaced.
The ongoing changes in AMMA reflect the need for increased accountability and transparency within the Malayalam film industry. As new members are considered for the committee, there is hope for a safer and more responsible environment moving forward.
