In 2017, during the promotion of her film Mom, the late Sridevi revealed that she had not spoken to her husband, Boney Kapoor, for three months. This decision was not due to any marital discord, but rather a deliberate choice she made to immerse herself completely into her role in the movie. Mom was produced by Boney Kapoor, and Sridevi’s dedication to her craft led her to interact with him only as a producer during this period.
At the trailer launch of Mom, Sridevi mentioned, “For three months, I did not speak to Boney ji as a husband. I used to greet him good morning and after packing up, I used to wish him goodnight – that’s all we spoke. That was the only conversation I had with him.” She further explained that she fully surrendered to the director’s vision, becoming a “director’s actor.” She trusted the film’s director, Ravi Udyawar, and followed his guidance to bring her character to life.
Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s relationship began long before their marriage in 1996. Boney first saw Sridevi in the 1970s when she was shooting for a Tamil film. Their paths crossed again while Sridevi was filming Mr. India in 1987, opposite Boney’s younger brother, Anil Kapoor. They started dating in the 1990s and eventually tied the knot in 1996. The couple had two daughters—Janhvi Kapoor, born on March 6, 1997, just a few days after Sridevi’s film Judaai was released, and Khushi Kapoor, born in 2000.
Tragically, Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, in Dubai, where she was attending a family function. The family had gathered for the wedding of actor Sonam Kapoor’s cousin, Mohit Marwah when the unfortunate incident occurred. Sridevi’s sudden death left a void in Indian cinema and the hearts of her family and fans.
Since her passing, Boney Kapoor has spoken on numerous occasions about his enduring love and fond memories of Sridevi. In an interview on her death anniversary, Boney expressed that he doesn’t seek closure from her death. “I am not looking for closure. I want her to be around me all the time. She is there in my thoughts and will remain in my thoughts all the time. There is not a single moment of the day when she is not with me. She may not be here physically, but she’s there in my mind all the time, and that keeps me going,” he shared.
