Dulquer Salmaan, the son of renowned Malayalam actor Mammootty, has recently been active in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films. Despite his strong roots in Malayalam cinema, Dulquer has been making fewer films in his home industry. Two years ago, in an interview with Baradwaj Rangan, he discussed why he chose to focus on other language films.
Dulquer explained that stepping away from his father’s shadow in Malayalam cinema has been a significant challenge. Although he has worked hard to establish his own identity, being Mammootty’s son remains a constant label in Kerala. Additionally, he mentioned that the trolling culture in Kerala’s film community has negatively impacted his mental health, making it difficult to cope with the pressure.
The actor, known for his role in “Sita Ramam,” shared that dealing with such negativity is tough. This is one of the reasons he prefers working in other languages where he feels more at ease and appreciated.

Dulquer has built a strong fan base in the Tamil and Telugu film industries. Although initially considered for the role played by Siddharth in “Indian 2,” he had to decline due to other commitments. Similarly, he was cast in Mani Ratnam’s “Thug Life,” but scheduling conflicts led to his exit from the project. Despite these setbacks, Dulquer’s films in Tamil and Telugu have performed well, underscoring his popularity in these regions.
In a conversation, Dulquer revealed that he rarely celebrates his success in Malayalam cinema. He fears that some people will attempt to undermine his achievements. He believes that focusing on films in other languages is better for his mental well-being. Success in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films makes him feel more valued compared to his experiences in Kerala.
