When Suriya worked in a garment factory to pay off his mother’s loan

Actor Suriya’s path to stardom was not straightforward. Unlike many star kids, he never intended to follow in his father Sivakumar’s footsteps. Instead, he began his career working in a garment factory, earning a modest salary of Rs 1,200 per month. His life took a turn when his mother revealed their financial struggles leading him to consider acting as a means to support his family.

Suriya’s first job was as a trainee in a garment factory, where he earned Rs 750 for the first 15 days. Over three years, his salary increased to Rs 8,000. During this time, his colleagues were unaware that he was the son of a well-known actor.

One day, his mother disclosed that she had borrowed Rs 25,000 which his father was unaware of. When Suriya asked about their savings, he was shocked to learn that their bank balance had never exceeded a lakh. This realization changed his perspective, making him question his career path.

Suriya initially wanted to start his own business believing his father would invest in it. However, the financial difficulties his family faced led him to reconsider. Though he received film offers due to his lineage, acting was never his plan. He confessed that he stepped into the industry solely to repay his mother’s loan.

His first experience on a film set was unexpected. Despite being an unknown face, the audience cheered for him after his first shot. This support encouraged him to continue acting, even as the industry and audience evolved over the years.

He was last seen in Kanguva directed by Siva and produced by Studio Green and UV Creations.
