During a promotion event for if Kalki 2898 AD, Kamal Haasan made a surprising comment about Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic film Sholay. During the event happened few days back, fans were thrilled to see Haasan and Bachchan, two legendary actors, reunite for Kalki 2898 AD. But Kamal Haasan shared a candid memory that took everyone by surprise: he initially “hated” Sholay after watching it.

In his speech, Kamal Haasan praised Amitabh Bachchan’s work and recalled his own experience with Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan had served as an assistant director for the movie. He mentioned how he couldn’t sleep after watching Sholay because he was so deeply affected by it. Kamal Haasan said, “When I saw Sholay, I initially hated it, and I even disliked the filmmaker, Ramesh Sippy, at that moment. But it left such an impact that I couldn’t sleep, and I told Ramesh Sippy about my reaction later. As a budding filmmaker, that movie influenced me profoundly.” Kamal Haasan expressed gratitude to Amitabh Bachchan, adding that hearing positive comments from the iconic actor about his work was something he had never expected.

For context, Sholay (1975) is a timeless classic that stars Dharmendra, Hema Malini, and Jaya Bachchan, alongside Amitabh Bachchan. The movie became a monumental success and remains a cultural phenomenon in Indian cinema.

Despite Kamal Haasan’s surprising revelation, the interaction between him and Bachchan reflected the mutual respect between the two stars. Though Amitabh Bachchan wasn’t physically present at the event, he joined through video conferencing, making the moment even more memorable. Both actors have a long history of collaboration, having starred together in films like Geraftaar (1985), Khabardar (1984), and Hey Ram (2000), and now, Kalki 2898 AD.
