VIP culture in Tirumala: Will new reforms benefit devotees?

AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has recently announced plans to reduce the influence of VIP culture in Tirumala, aiming to make the pilgrimage smoother for ordinary devotees. He emphasized that the spiritual atmosphere at Tirumala should remain sacred, with nothing but the chants of “Govinda” being heard.

This move is seen as a response to the practices under the YSRCP government (2019-2024), during which VIP privileges were significantly expanded. Reports suggest that up to 20 VIP passes were issued daily for each YSRCP MLA, with each pass allowing multiple people to skip long queues. Some VIPs, like former ministers Peddi Reddy and RK Roja, were even accused of bringing large groups for special access. Allegations also surfaced that VIP passes were being sold for personal profit.

Naidu has expressed his intention to reform this system, ensuring regular devotees can have a smooth and quick darshan experience. While certain high-ranking officials such as the President, Prime Minister, and Governors will still receive special treatment, Naidu aims to reduce VIP access for others. However, specific guidelines for this plan have yet to be released.

If successfully implemented, these reforms could greatly enhance the experience of common pilgrims by reducing waiting times and ensuring equal access for all.
