Britain’s Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, supports the use of ChatGPT in education. He believes children can use the AI tool for homework with proper supervision. This statement came during a BBC interview. Kyle was asked if using ChatGPT for homework was appropriate, as the UK works on an AI framework.

Kyle highlighted that AI is already integrated into the economy. He compared the current debate about ChatGPT to earlier discussions about calculators. He stressed the importance of teaching children how to use AI responsibly.

ChatGPT is an advanced AI tool that enables human-like conversations and task completion. Its increasing use has raised concerns in education. Many students rely on such tools to complete homework and pass exams. Critics worry this may affect their learning process.

However, Kyle believes ChatGPT can enhance children’s abilities. He stated that the tool could help gifted children access challenges unavailable elsewhere. According to him, using AI tools could provide unique opportunities for learning and development.

The UK government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is preparing an AI Action Plan. This initiative focuses on AI development and safety. Officials estimate that AI could contribute £47 billion annually to the UK economy. Private companies are expected to invest £14 billion, which could create 13,000 new jobs.

Kyle also addressed AI safety. He criticized former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s approach, which he said caused unnecessary fear. The Labour government aims to ensure balanced AI development while addressing safety concerns.

Details of the AI Action Plan are still emerging. Reports suggest the possible creation of a “sovereign AI team.” The government remains optimistic about AI’s potential to transform education, the economy and various industries.
