Top 7 upcoming Telugu films with a mythological touch
Allu Arjun once mentioned in an interview that the younger generation is embracing Indian tradition, and he wasn’t wrong. The success of movies like “Akhanda,” “Kantara,” “Karthikeya 2,” and “HanuMan” has shown that films based on Indian mythology can be box-office hits if made well. Unlike less successful attempts like “Adipurush” or “Shaakuntalam,” these movies have found an eager audience.
Here’s a look at some upcoming Telugu films that continue this trend:
1. Adhira
Directed by Prasanth Varma, “Adhira” stars Kalyan Dasari, the son of producer DVV Danayya. The film appears to be based on Lord Indra, as suggested by the promotional materials. It features the debutant in a hooded cloak, wielding a sword that looks like a spine amidst lightning.
2. Jai Hanuman
Also directed by Prasanth Varma, “Jai Hanuman” will focus on Lord Hanuman. The lead role for this film is yet to be cast, but it promises to delve deep into the mythology surrounding this revered deity.
 3. Kalki 2898 AD Part 2
Nag Ashwin’s “Kalki 2898 AD,” starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, is a sci-fi fantasy rooted in the Mahabharata. It explores the lore of Kalyug and Kalki avatars. The first part was a hit, and the second part is eagerly awaited.
4. Kannappa
“Kannappa,” directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by Mohan Babu, is a hagiographical film about a devotee of Shiva. Vishnu Manchu stars in the title role, with cameo appearances by Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Prabhas as gods from Indian mythology. Promotional materials suggest a straightforward mythological drama, akin to Nagarjuna’s 1997 film “Annamayya,” but a modern twist might be in store.
5. Kubera
Sekhar Kammula’s “Kubera” stars Dhanush, Rashmika Mandanna, Nagarjuna, and Jim Sarbh. Set in modern times, the film’s title hints at deeper mythological significance. The first look of Dhanush showed him with a long beard and hair, dressed in tattered clothes, with a painting of Lord Shiva receiving alms from Goddess Annapurna in the background. Kubera, known as the god of wealth, suggests an intriguing storyline.
6. Odela 2
“Odela 2,” the sequel to “Odela Railway Station,” features Tamannaah Bhatia as Shiva Shakti, a naga sadhu. Promotional videos show her with matted hair, kohl-lined eyes, and saffron markings on her forehead. While the mythological angle is yet to be revealed, Hebbah Patel, Vasishta N Simha, Murali Sharma, and Srikanth Iyengar will reprise their roles.
 7. Pushpa 2: The Rule
Sukumar’s “Pushpa 2: The Rule” continues the story from “Pushpa: The Rise.” The lyrics in “Daakko Daakko Meka” hinted at a deeper mythological context. The promotional material has focused on Allu Arjun’s Mathangi vesham, featuring a blue saree, body paint, and traditional jewelry. A fight scene and a song in this get-up have already been filmed, heightening anticipation for the sequel.
