THIS Telugu film sets world record for longest theatrical run
Telugu cinema has a long history of blockbuster movies that captivate audiences for years. In the past, films ran in theaters for hundreds of days, attracting large crowds. However with the rise of digital streaming and multi-screen releases, movies now stay in theaters for only a few weeks. But one Telugu film has defied the trend by running for over three years in a single theater setting a rare record in Indian cinema history.
The 2014 blockbuster Legend starring Nandamuri Balakrishna and directed by Boyapati Srinu achieved this extraordinary milestone. Released on March 28, 2014, the movie continued to screen at the Archana Theater in Proddatur, Andhra Pradesh until 2017—a record-breaking run of more than 1,000 days. This made Legend the only Telugu film in recent times to achieve such an incredible feat.
Balakrishna enjoys immense popularity, especially in the Rayalaseema region, where his movies are celebrated with great enthusiasm. In Kurnool district’s Emmiganoor, the film also completed 1,000 days, proving its unbeatable craze among fans. Even when newer films hit theaters, Legend continued to draw audiences, showing the power of fan loyalty.
To mark this historic achievement, the theater owner Obul Reddy and director Boyapati Srinu released a special poster celebrating the movie’s success. The event was attended by fans who had supported the film throughout its extended run.
In earlier times, films like Lava Kusha, Missamma and Pathala Bhairavi ran in theaters for several years. However, with the rise of OTT platforms, television premieres and large-scale multi-theater releases, producers now prefer quick returns on investment. As a result modern films rarely run beyond a few weeks.
