Telangana sets new liquor sales record during Dasara festivities

Telangana is known for its grand celebrations of Bathukamma and Dasara, two of the state’s biggest festivals. During this festive period, there is usually a significant increase in the consumption of alcohol and meat, as people celebrate for nine consecutive days. Each year, liquor sales in Telangana reach record levels, and this year saw a new high.

Reports reveal that in the last 10 days, liquor sales in the state amounted to a massive Rs. 1100 crore. The majority of these sales came from wine shops, followed by bars and pubs, providing substantial revenue for the government. Hyderabad, as expected, topped the list in liquor sales, with sales spiking on the final weekend of the festival. The state’s Excise Department stated that over 10.44 lakh cases of liquor and 17.59 lakh beer bottles were sold across Telangana during this period.

While Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts led in sales, districts such as Karimnagar, Nalgonda, and Warangal followed closely. Despite the increase in total sales, the government’s revenue from liquor sales slightly decreased compared to last year’s Dasara season. Last year, the state earned Rs. 317.21 crore from liquor sales, but this year, the revenue was around Rs. 312 crore, marking a reduction of approximately Rs. 5 crore.

This slight decline in government revenue did not overshadow the impressive sales figures, especially in the context of the festive atmosphere. Liquor sales continue to be a significant source of income for Telangana, particularly during major festivals like Bathukamma and Dasara.
