Tamil director arrested for controversial comments on panchamirtham
Tamil film director Mohan G was arrested by the Trichy District Cybercrime Police on September 24, following controversial remarks he allegedly made about Panchamirtham, a sacred offering served at the Pazhani temple in Tamil Nadu. His comments, which reportedly included a claim that the offering contains contraceptive medicines, led to widespread public outrage and a social media storm. The police apprehended him in Chennai and will transfer him to Trichy for further investigation.
According to reports, Mohan G’s statement regarding Panchamirtham caused significant uproar among the public, leading to his arrest. The offering, which holds religious significance for devotees, is traditionally made of honey, jaggery, and other ingredients. By claiming that it contains contraceptive substances, the filmmaker deeply offended religious sentiments, triggering swift legal action.

Mohan G’s remarks were seen as highly inappropriate, especially considering the religious sensitivity surrounding the matter. In response to the growing controversy, the Tamil Nadu government initiated an inquiry and took legal steps, leading to his arrest.
The manner of his arrest has raised concerns among some political figures. The Chennai BJP President expressed frustration on social media, stating that Mohan G was arrested without prior notice and that his family was not informed about the reasons for his detention. He argued that this goes against a Supreme Court ruling, which mandates that families be notified in such cases. Despite these concerns, Mohan G remains in police custody, and further investigations are underway.
Mohan G is known for his work in Tamil cinema, having directed several notable films. He debuted with Pazhaya Vannarapettai in 2016. However, it was his 2020 film Draupathi that brought him widespread recognition. Though initially controversial due to its themes, Draupathi became a box office success. What made this achievement even more remarkable was that the film was crowdfunded and lacked the support of traditional producers.
After Draupathi, Mohan G continued to make films such as Rudra Thandavam and Bakasuran. While his films have been commercially successful, they have often stirred public debates due to their sensitive content.
