Dil Raju’s ‘Shaakuntalam’ is an inch closer to an epic disaster. With the negative talk from the first premier, Dil Raju-Gunasekhar and the team remained tight-lipped.
The usual norm in the industry is to celebrate the success of the film, how much of a disaster it is, with fireworks on the first day, hold a press meet during the weekend only to impress the crowd with good words, and pull them to theaters. But contrary to this, the ‘Shaakuntalam’ team was unavailable since day one.
According to figures, the film collected Rs 7.5 crore gross in three days. That means, the share is pegged at Rs 3.6 crore. This is a very small amount. The theatrical business was sold for Rs 18 crores.
But makers claimed that the budget has been overrun to Rs 80 crores. The satellite rights haven’t been sold yet. Nor is there any news on the OTT release.
Chances look grim in the second week as well. Theaters won’t hold the film if the situation persists with no profits. Gunasekhar and Neelim Guna, who were seen at Devi 70mm on the first day, have disappeared since then.
Samantha too is silent on Twitter. As the film has been rejected unanimously, no one is daring to put a word. Buyers are frightened by the loss. They’re fearing that ‘Shaakuntalam’ might surpass the records of ‘Acharya’ and ‘Liger,’ which were the top disasters last year.
