The competition between ‘Salaar’ and ‘Dunki’ for advance ticket sales in India shows Prabhas’ movie leading the way. ‘Salaar,’ directed by Prashanth Neel of KGF fame, has gained much attention and anticipation from audiences since its teaser and trailer release.
As of Sunday, ‘Salaar’ surpassed 100,000 tickets sold in India, while ‘Dunki,’ featuring Shah Rukh Khan, fell behind in ticket sales. ‘Salaar’ is set to hit screens worldwide on December 22, a day after the release of ‘Dunki,’ which is scheduled for December 21.
The Prabhas-starrer ‘Salaar’ earned around Rs 2.14 crore from its ticket sales, with notable contributions from various Indian states including Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi.
Notably, director SS Rajamouli made headlines by purchasing the first ticket for ‘Salaar’ in Nizam from the production team.
In contrast, ‘Dunki,’ directed by Rajkumar Hirani, experienced comparatively lower advance booking numbers, with around 69,834 tickets sold for its Hindi 2D shows, generating approximately Rs 2.31 crore. Its major ticket sales came from states like West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and Telangana.
Both films showed impressive advance sales in North America, with ‘Salaar’ crossing the $1 million mark and ‘Dunki’ reaching over $250,000 in advance sales by Sunday.
Regarding non-theatrical rights, ‘Salaar’ has secured satellite rights with Star TV for all languages and digital rights with Netflix, earning a reported Rs 350 crore from these rights. Meanwhile, ‘Dunki’ acquired its digital rights from Jio Cinema for Rs 155 crore, surpassing previous records.
‘Salaar’ focuses on a gang leader fulfilling a promise, featuring Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jagapathi Babu, Tinnu Anand, Bobby Simha, and Easwari Rao. On the other hand, ‘Dunki’ delves into the story of illegal immigration, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vicky Kaushal, Vikram Kochhar, and Anil Grover.
The race between ‘Salaar’ and ‘Dunki’ in ticket sales and non-theatrical rights has generated significant buzz in the Indian film industry.
