Dawid Dhawan used to remake so many Telugu films in Hindi. But now, he has started remaking his own Hindi films with his son. Next in line is Coolie No 1 which is out on Amazon. Read on to see if this remake has any juice in it.
Plot
Dawid Dhawan does not make a change to the original and keeps the story intact. Raj(Govinda) is a Coolie who loves a rich girl played by Sara Ali. As he is poor, he cannot marry Sara who is being pressurized by her father to marry someone else. So Raj becomes this rich guy and tries to fool Sara’s dad played by Paresh Rawal. How far doe he becomes successful forms the story of this comedy caper.
Performances
Govinda was so good in the original that it is so hard to beat his performance. That does not mean that credit should be taken away from Varun Dhawan. The young actor goes full-on and gives his comical best in the film. Varun is superb as Raj and his funny dialogue delivery is solid. In all his comedy scenes, Varun packs a punch and makes things look good. Sara is gorgeous and dances well. But when it comes to her performance, she is over the top and looks weird with her expresisons. Javed Jaffery gets a good role after a long time and Paresh Rawal is made to look the silliest best in the film along with Rajpal Yadav who is very irritating.
Analysis
Dawid Dhawan takes us into his own world of fun and comedy in his films which are different from the rest. But with Coolie No 1, he is still stuck in the ’90s and does not try one bit to make an effort. It comes across as very labored and the fundamental difference lies in the remake compared to the original. The story of Coolie No 1 is very outdated for the current times. Still, there is no effort in updating it.
Varun Dhawan saves that day, if and only if, you don’t mind his overacting. It is all well within the universe created for him to operate. The film is filled with over-the-top scenes that would have worked in the ’90s but not anymore. So, in a nutshell, Coolie No 1 is a bad remake that fails to entertain even its target audience which is a sad thing to see from the work of Dawid Dhawan.
