Renowned Bollywood filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is set to make his debut in the ever-evolving world of Over-the-Top (OTT) streaming platforms.
His upcoming venture into the OTT space involves a series led by Vikrant Massey, celebrated for his role in the recently praised film ’12th Fail’. The much-anticipated series is slated for release on Disney Plus Hotstar, marking Hirani’s inaugural foray into this digital domain.
At 61, the popular director, fresh from his work on ‘Dunki’, shared his enthusiasm for this new project. Though he won’t be directing it himself, Hirani is deeply immersed as the showrunner. Expressing his satisfaction with the script and its development, he remarked, “I’m doing an OTT show, which we start shooting this month. I’m a showrunner for that; I’m not directing it. It’s a show for Hotstar (Disney+ Hotstar), and Vikrant Massey is playing a role in it. It’s something I’m pleased about with the script and the way it has panned out. I am deeply involved in this show, and it feels like it’s in my own space.”
Amidst this exciting venture, Hirani also revealed insights about the stalled ‘Munnabhai’ series. Despite earlier plans to direct the third installment, he clarified that the project hasn’t progressed due to his insistence on crafting a compelling story.
His intention is not to merely capitalize on the success of the initial two movies, ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ (2003) and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (2006), which starred Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi in the lead roles of a comical goon and his loyal companion.
Hirani’s strategic delay in continuing the ‘Munnabhai’ series underscores his commitment to quality storytelling, even as he embarks on a new creative journey in the realm of digital streaming with Vikrant Massey steering the upcoming series on Disney Plus Hotstar.
