In a recent development in the Pune luxury car crash case, two officials from the Yerawada police station were suspended on Friday for alleged dereliction of duty. The incident involved a 17-year-old juvenile driving a Porsche, which allegedly knocked down and killed two people in the early hours of May 19.
Inspector Rahul Jagdale and Assistant Police Inspector Vishwanath Todkari were suspended for “late reporting” and “dereliction of duty,” according to additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil. The crash occurred in the Kalyani Nagar area of the city, leading to an accident case being registered at the Yerawada police station.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar revealed that an internal inquiry pointed to lapses by police officials in registering the case. He acknowledged a delay in collecting blood samples from the juvenile, who had reportedly consumed alcohol at two pubs before the accident. Despite the crash happening around 3 am on Sunday, the blood samples were only collected at 11 pm, Kumar stated.
Initially, the offence was registered under section 304(A) (death caused by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it was later amended to section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), indicating a more severe charge.
