At a recent event for the trailer launch of the film Revu renowned producer Dil Raju made some bold comments about the current state of the Telugu film industry. He particularly talked about the quick shift of movies from theatres to OTT platforms.
Dil Raju pointed out that the growing trend of releasing movies on OTT platforms just a few weeks after their theatrical release is making audiences stay away from theatres. According to Dil Raju, this trend has spoiled the audience as many people now prefer waiting for movies to appear on streaming platforms rather than visiting theaters.
Dil Raju mentioned that earlier, the audience would be eager to go to the theater but now they prefer staying at home knowing that the movie will be available on OTT platforms in just a few weeks.
Dil Raju said, “The audience would be eager to go to the theater, but now they prefer staying at home knowing that the movie will be available on OTT platforms in just a few weeks. Even small films are being released on OTT within a week of their theater run while big-budget films are available in three to four weeks. This has led to a change in mindset among audiences who now question the need to spend money on expensive theater tickets when they can simply wait for the OTT release”.
Interestingly, he also pointed out that some producers start working on a film only after securing an OTT deal. This particular comment sparked debates in social media with many wondering whether the producers themselves are responsible for the decline in theater attendance.
With these unexpected comments from Dil Raju, we have to wait and see if producers will shift their focus from securing OTT deals to improving movie quality aiming to boost theater collections.
