While filming for 376D that releases on ShemarooMe Box Office later this week, debutant actress Priyanka Sharma found herself in constant internal conflict with what her character had to offer through the film. Priyanka plays the role of the defence lawyer in the movie 376D which covers the sensitive premise of gang rape in India. Defending a rapist seems like a fairly morally bankrupt thing to do and that is what disturbed Priyanka about her character. Priyanka divulged that she found it really difficult to resonate with her character as she strongly feels that justice should be served to those who encroach on personal freedom of individuals through heinous acts like rape.
Priyanka felt that her character chased power and money more than what stood morally correct and which unfortunately is the truth of our society. However, she had to overcome her inhibitions about the character and put her best foot forward to play the role for, a lawyer works on the principle of testing and proving evidence until the client is found guilty.
Priyanka says that “As an individual, especially as a woman it was very challenging for me to play this high profile lawyer who is completely unattached to the trauma of the victim and perhaps her own heart and she, is just fighting the case to win. While shooting, somewhere I knew I didn’t want to defend those people and they are clearly criminals and the entire Nirbhaya incident kept looming in my head. The whole sense of injustice in the film was very upsetting for me but my character really had to stand tall and defend the rapists.”
