Priyanka Chopra, now a global icon and one of Hollywood’s prominent actresses, began her acting journey in Indian cinema with a Tamil film. Her debut was alongside Superstar Thalapathy Vijay in the movie Thamizhan.
In a recent interview with Filmygyan, Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, shared intriguing details about her daughter’s initial foray into the South Indian film industry. Despite Priyanka’s current status in Hollywood, her journey began with reluctance and tears.
From Reluctance to Enthusiasm
Madhu Chopra revealed that Priyanka was hesitant to enter the film industry and initially did not want to act. However, the opportunity to work in a Tamil film came through an acquaintance. Being an obedient daughter, Priyanka heeded her mother’s advice and accepted the role, marking her debut in cinema.
Working with Thalapathy Vijay
Reflecting on Priyanka’s experience filming “Thamizhan,” Madhu Chopra recounted how her daughter gradually began to enjoy the process despite the language barrier. “When she was shooting for the film, she began to like it. Despite not knowing the language, she enjoyed it. The team even helped her a lot and treated her with respect,” Madhu Chopra shared.
Overcoming Challenges
Madhu Chopra also reminisced about Vijay’s supportive nature, describing him as a gentleman. However, Priyanka faced challenges, especially in keeping up with Vijay in dance sequences. To overcome this, she practiced rigorously with choreographer Raju Sundaram from morning to evening. This intense practice not only improved her dancing skills but also fostered her passion for filmmaking and helped her build resilience and character.

Priyanka Chopra’s early experiences in the Tamil film industry, particularly her debut with Thalapathy Vijay, played a significant role in shaping her career. From overcoming initial reluctance to developing a love for the art of filmmaking, these experiences laid the foundation for her eventual success in both Indian cinema and Hollywood.
