Power purchase scam:
Former Telangana Chief Minister and BRS leader, K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), experienced a legal setback as the High Court dismissed his petition against the Justice Narasimha Reddy commission. The current Congress government initiated an investigation into alleged irregularities in the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Chhattisgarh and the construction of Bhadradri and Yadadri thermal power plants during KCR’s tenure. The commission, led by Justice Narasimha Reddy, was tasked with examining these issues and sought KCR’s response.
In his defense, KCR argued that the commission was politically motivated and biased towards the current government. He requested that Justice Narasimha Reddy step down from the commission. KCR’s petition claimed that the formation of the commission violated the Commission of Inquiry Act 1952 and the Electricity Act 2003. He maintained that all power purchases were conducted according to the rules and denied the allegations.
KCR anticipated being called for questioning and filed a petition in the High Court to prevent this. However, the High Court concluded that the investigation adhered to legal procedures and found KCR’s petition insufficient for a trial. Consequently, the court dismissed his petition, allowing the commission’s investigation to proceed.
With the dismissal of KCR’s petition, it is likely that the commission will summon him for questioning regarding the alleged irregularities. The ongoing investigation continues to scrutinize the decisions made during his administration.
