The COVID pandemic has hit the showbiz hard. It is well known that several big-ticket films which were scheduled for summer release, have got postponed with the indefinite lockdown. A day ago, makers of Gulabo Sitabo starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan have gone ahead with an OTT release on June 12.
Now, Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi is taking a similar route and will have an OTT release on Amazon Prime Video shortly. Directed by Anu Menon, the film is a biopic on Shakuntala Devi, who is hailed as a ‘human computer’. Speaking about the film, Vidya Balan had said, “I am extremely excited to play the human-computer, Shakuntala Devi. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success. But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with Math…and she completely turns that perception on its head.”
Telugu films to go for OTT release?
Given the grim situation and fate of showbiz in limbo, several Bollywood films are opting for an OTT release at least to churn out some moolah. Back home in Telugu cinema though, there’s still no clarity. Uppena (Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty), Raj Tarun’s Orey Bujjiga and Mohan Krishna Indraganti’s ‘V’ (starring Nani, Sudheer Babu, Nivetha Thomas and Aditi Rao Hydari) were among a few films that got postponed due to lockdown.
Though there have been several reports that Tollywood films may also settle for an OTT release, no official announcement has been made. The next few weeks would prove crucial to know if movie buffs would get to watch the new releases on OTT or in the theatres.
