Netflix bags Black Crab

Black Crab is, an action thriller based on the novel by Swedish writer Jerker Virdborg. Virdborg’s novel is set in a post-apocalyptic world where climate change has created an endless winter and a bitter civil war threatens civilization. The plot follows six soldiers sent on a dangerous mission across a frozen sea to transport a package that could finally end the war. Noomi Rapace, who rocketed to international fame in her breakthrough role as goth hacker Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish Dragon Tattoo films, has signed on to star in it. Scandinavian shingle Indio is producing the feature for Netflix. Commercials and music video director Adam Berg will adapt and helm Black Crab in his feature debut.

Black Crab “I’m very excited to come back to Sweden and do Black Crab,” said Rapace in a statement. “[It’s] my first Swedish film in … years. Can’t wait to get suited up and go on this journey – explore human shadows and slide through broken dreams and a world on edge. Survival to what price?”Rapace’s last Swedish feature was Beyond, from director Pernilla August, in 2010. She also starred in Scandi horror The Monitor (2011) from Norwegian filmmaker Pal Sletaune. But the actress is no stranger to sci-fi. Since Dragon Tattoo, Rapace has carved out a genre niche in high-concept fiction, with roles as archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012), as the sister clones Monday to Friday in Tommy Wirkola’s Netflix feature What Happened to Monday? (2017), and as the Inferni elf Leilah in David Ayer’s Bright, also for Netflix. Malin Idevall is producing Black Crab together with Mattias Montero for Indio. Netflix plans a global release for the film in 2022.
