A 33-year-old mother, whose infant was recently rescued from the sunshade of a Chennai apartment, allegedly died by suicide following intense criticism over her supposed negligence.
Police reported that the woman took this extreme step at her parents’ house in Karamadai. A case has been registered under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
“She was deeply disturbed after her child accidentally slipped from her hands and fell onto the sunshade of the apartment where she lived with her husband in Thirumullaivoyal, Chennai,” said a senior police officer on Tuesday.
The tragic incident occurred on May 18, when the woman was found unconscious at her parents’ house. Despite immediate efforts to rush her to the hospital, she was declared dead upon arrival.
A recent video showing the dramatic rescue of the eight-month-old child by apartment residents went viral on social media. In the video, a group of residents waited below the sunshade with a bedspread, hoping to catch the child. Two men climbed onto the balcony, and one managed to grab the girl by her dress and bring her down safely.
The mother faced significant criticism on social media for her alleged negligence, while the rescuers were widely praised for their quick actions. Following the incident on April 28, the woman had moved to her parents’ house.
This tragic event highlights the profound impact of social media criticism and the intense pressures faced by individuals in distressing situations.
