Varun Tej Konidela’s period action thriller Matka, which premiered in theaters on November 14, 2024, is all set for its OTT release. Directed by Karuna Kumar, the movie will stream on Amazon Prime Video starting December 5, 2024. The announcement was made via a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the film as a gripping tale of risk and reward.
Set between 1958 and 1982 in Visakhapatnam, Matka follows the life of Vasu, a man determined to escape poverty and rise in the gambling world. The movie, inspired by the life of real Matka gambler Ratan Khetri, delves into the Matka gambling system, a form of betting that emerged before India’s Partition and was later declared illegal.

Varun Tej’s portrayal of Vasu showcases the character’s transformation from a struggling individual to a powerful gangster over 24 years. The movie also features Meenakshi Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi in leading roles, with supporting performances from Saloni Aswani, Kishore, Naveen Chandra, and others.
Despite its captivating storyline and Varun Tej’s performance, Matka received mixed reviews for its narration and underperformed at the box office. However, the film’s detailed depiction of the crime world and its engaging music, composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar, have been appreciated. The movie was released in multiple languages, including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
This marks Varun Tej’s 14th film, and he is rumored to collaborate with director Merlapaka Gandhi for his next project. However, due to Matka’s box office performance, the producer is reportedly reconsidering the venture.
