On Tuesday, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) reported a staggering 6593 trips of water tankers operating within the city, highlighting the escalating demand for water in various areas. With 644 tankers actively in operation, neighbourhoods such as Manikonda, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Jubilee Hills, and Banjara Hills are predominantly requesting additional water supply.
The data released by HMWSSB reveals a substantial increase in water supply compared to the previous year, with an additional 139.53 million litres per day (Mld) of water being distributed. Last year’s total supply stood at 2270 Mld on the same day, whereas this year’s supply has surged to 2409.53 Mld, reflecting the growing demand amidst changing environmental conditions.
However, concerns arise as water levels in key reservoirs such as Nagarjunasagar and Yellampally are plummeting to minimum drawdown levels. To address this impending crisis, emergency pumping operations are scheduled to commence at Nagarjunasagar on April 15, 2024, and at Yellampalli from May 1, 2024. These measures aim to stabilize water levels and ensure uninterrupted supply to residents across Hyderabad.
In response to the escalating demand and potential water scarcity, HMWSSB reassured the public that all eligible customers would continue to receive free water supply. Bills are temporarily suspended for customers benefiting from the free water supply scheme, underscoring the board’s commitment to mitigating the impact of water shortages on the community.
