Vijay Setupathi was supposed to do the biopic of Srilankan cricketer Muttiah Muralidharan, but the actor opted out of the project. There was a controversy surrounding the film, with many Tamilians not happy with Vijay playing Muralidharan and elevating his character. Muralidaran’s relationship with the Rajapaksa government has become a big controversy that Tamilians did not like. They strongly opposed the project, and Vijay Setupathi had to bow down to the pressure. However, regarding people opposing the project, a few over-enthusiastic people on social media abused Vijay Setupathi and his family members.
A netizen issued rape threats to Vijay’s minor daughter on social media. The rape threats came from the Twitter handle @ItsRithikRajh. Chennai cybercrime cops registered a case against the Twitter user, and the cops tracked him down in Sri Lanka. The police officials did not reveal any details about the Twitter user but confirmed that his current location is Sri Lanka.
Chennai police filed an FIR under sections 153 (intent to causing riot), 294 (B) (using obscene language in a public place) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 67B (transmitting obscene material through the internet) of the Information Technology Act.
