Mammootty and Mohanlal have been beloved stars in Malayalam cinema for years. But did you know they once played father and son in a movie?
In 1982, they appeared in the epic period film “Padayottam,” directed by Jijo Punnoose. The film, loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel “The Count of Monte Cristo,” tells the story of a young prince seeking revenge against those who betrayed his uncle.
Despite only a nine-year age difference in real life, Mammootty and Mohanlal portrayed father and son in the film. Mammootty’s role as Kamaran was a significant breakthrough for him, moving him away from playing older characters.
“Padayottam” featured a star-studded cast, including Prem Nazir, Madhu, Lakshmi, Shankar, Poornima Bhagyaraj, N. Govindan Kutty, and Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair. The film was a big-budget production for its time, costing Rs 1 crore when the average Malayalam film budget was Rs 15 lakh.
Mammootty and Mohanlal’s Current Projects
Mammootty was recently seen in the film “Turbo,” directed by Vysakh. He played Turbo Jose, a character who frequently gets into trouble and fights his way out. The movie was a commercial success despite mixed reviews.
He is currently filming a new project with director Gautham Vasudev Menon, marking Menon’s debut in Malayalam cinema. Mammootty will also star in the upcoming movie “Bazooka.”
Meanwhile, Mohanlal is preparing for the release of his highly anticipated fantasy film “Barroz” which marks his directorial debut. After several delays the film is set to premiere on September 12, 2024.
