Vijay Sethupathi’s milestone 50th film, “Maharaja,” has been a hot topic since it hit theaters on June 14, 2024. The Tamil crime thriller has received immense praise from audiences and prominent figures in the film industry. For those who couldn’t catch it in theaters, there’s good news: “Maharaja” is set for its OTT release on Netflix.
The film, written and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, will be available on Netflix starting July 12, 2024. Netflix India announced this exciting news on Instagram, creating a buzz among fans. The social media post hinted at the film’s intriguing plot: “When his ‘Lakshmi’ is stolen, hidden secrets come to light. How far will Maharaja go to set things right?” Additionally, the film will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
“Maharaja” has marked a significant milestone in Vijay Sethupathi’s career. Recently, the team celebrated the film’s 25-day theatrical run during which it grossed over 100 crores on a modest budget of 20 crores. Remarkably, the film has also set new records at the USA box office surpassing the earnings of the 2024 science fiction film “Ayalaan,” making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.
The story of “Maharaja” revolves around a barber who embarks on a quest for revenge after his home is burglarized. He informs the police that his “Lakshmi” is missing leading to confusion over whether Lakshmi is a person or an object. Alongside Vijay Sethupathi, the film features a stellar cast including Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas Munishkanth and Manikandan in key roles.
Looking ahead, Vijay Sethupathi will next appear in “Viduthalai Part 2,” a Tamil political period crime thriller directed and co-produced by Vetrimaaran. He previously starred in the first installment, portraying the character Perumal. “Viduthalai Part 2” is scheduled for release in the latter half of 2024.
There are also speculations about Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming projects. It is rumored that he will collaborate with director Pandiraj for his 52nd film. Although no official announcement has been made reports suggest that the script is ready and filming will begin soon.
