Superstar late Krishna and late Sobhan Babu share a rare record of sharing screen space together on the Telugu silver screen. One of their blockbuster flicks ‘Mundadugu’ which was released on February 25, 40 years ago, earned quite a fame.
Produced by D. Ramanaidu under the banner Suresh Productions, the film was directed by K Bapaiah.
Senior stars Sobhan Babu, Krishna, Sridevi, Jayaprada, Satyanarayana Kaikala, Rao Gopalrao, Allu Ramalingaiah, Chalapathi Rao, Giribabu, Nuthan Prasad, Prabhakar Reddy, Sivakrishna, Annapurna, Ravi Kondalrao, Radha Kumari played in key roles.
Parachuri brothers rendered the dialogues and the screenplay for the film. Chakravarthy had composed the music while Veturi penned the lyrics for the songs.
‘Munduadugu’ had a successful run at the box office. It completed 100 or more days in 20 centres in Andhra Pradesh. The film also stood as the top grosser of 1983 with record collections. It also celebrated Golden Jubilee at Hyderabad’s Sandhya 70mm theatre and Apsara theatre in Vijayawada.
Later in 1984, ‘Mundadugu’ was remade in Hindi with the title ‘Maqsad’ starring Rajesh Khanna, Jithendra, Sridevi and Jayaprada. K Bapaiah who directed the Telugu version, was roped in for the Hindi remake and Suresh Production bankrolled the project.
