Kerala nursing college ragging case: 5 seniors arrested for brutal abuse

A disturbing case of ragging has surfaced in a government nursing college in Kottayam, Kerala. According to reports, senior students subjected first-year students to extreme physical and emotional abuse. The victims alleged that they were forced to strip naked, and heavy dumbbells were hung from their private parts as a form of torture.

Three first-year students filed a complaint with the police, detailing the horrific acts they endured. Authorities registered a case under the Anti-Ragging Act, leading to the arrest of five third-year students. The complaint revealed that the abuse started in November 2024 and had continued for months without intervention.

The victims narrated that the seniors not only inflicted physical injuries using sharp objects like compasses but also forced them to apply lotion on their wounds, intensifying their pain. The complaint also mentioned that the seniors smeared cream on their faces and even into their mouths. In addition, the accused students allegedly extorted money from the juniors every Sunday to buy alcohol and later assaulted them.

The situation became unbearable for the victims, prompting them to report the incident to the Kottayam Gandhinagar police. Following the complaint, the authorities arrested five senior students. The accused are expected to be presented in court soon.

This incident is not an isolated case. A few weeks earlier, a 14-year-old student in Kochi reportedly took his own life with his family attributing the tragedy to bullying and ragging at school. The Kerala government has taken serious note of these incidents, with Education Minister V Sivankutty ordering a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The shocking nature of the Kottayam nursing college incident has once again highlighted the dangers of ragging in educational institutions. Political leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, have condemned the act, emphasizing the need for kindness and intervention in cases of bullying and ragging. He urged parents to take their children’s complaints seriously and ensure their safety in schools and colleges.
