Kanguva release: Suriya’s film caught in last-minute complications?
The release of Kanguva, starring Suriya and Bobby Deol, is facing legal issues. Scheduled to release on November 14, the Madras High Court has ordered the movie’s producers to deposit Rs 20 crore with the court’s official assignee before the premiere. This legal demand stems from unpaid debts by producer KE Gnanavel Raja, related to a previous project.
This issue dates back to 2011, when Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green entered a production agreement with investor Arjunlal Sunderdas. Arjunlal initially invested Rs 12.85 crore into the project but later withdrew, leaving an unsettled debt. After Arjunlal’s death, the Madras High Court appointed an assignee to manage his remaining finances and recover the debt owed by Studio Green. In 2019, the court ordered Raja to repay Rs 10.35 crore with 18% interest, but only a partial payment of Rs 3.93 crore was collected after the release of another Studio Green film, Thangalaan.
With this background, the assignee sought further court intervention to ensure the debt is cleared before Kanguva’s release. The court stated that if the Rs 20 crore deposit is not made by November 13 midnight, Kanguva cannot be released.
This legal requirement adds a significant hurdle to the film’s release plans. More updates on the case are awaited as the deadline approaches.
