The 1991 movie Thalapathi marked the first collaboration between superstar Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam. The film, also starring Mammootty, became a significant commercial success. However, not many know that Rajinikanth initially struggled while filming for this classic and had to seek help from his long-time friend and fellow actor Kamal Haasan.
In a 2022 event, Rajinikanth shared his challenges while working on Thalapathi. He recounted his first scene with actress Shobana, who had a dominant and intimidating presence on set. She even joked that Kamal Haasan might replace him in the film. Rajinikanth found it difficult to adapt to Mani Ratnam’s strict and precise direction, which demanded more natural and subtle performances, unlike the typical expressive style Rajinikanth was accustomed to.
Rajinikanth explained that he was used to certain “stock expressions” for various emotions, but Mani Ratnam rejected these and asked him to genuinely feel the emotions in each scene. Confused and frustrated, Rajinikanth decided to reach out to Kamal Haasan for advice. When he expressed his difficulties, Kamal Haasan, aware of Mani Ratnam’s unique directing style, suggested that Rajinikanth ask Mani to demonstrate the scenes and simply mimic his actions. This advice worked wonders for Rajinikanth, allowing him to deliver a performance that is still celebrated.
On the work front, both icons are set for major upcoming projects. Rajinikanth’s next film, Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel and featuring stars like Fahadh Faasil and Amitabh Bachchan, is slated for release on October 14, 2024. He is also planning a sequel to Jailer with Nelson Dilipkumar and collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj for Coolie.
Kamal Haasan, last seen in Indian 2, is gearing up for Thug Life and has rejoined Mani Ratnam after many years. Additionally, he is set to reprise his role in the much-anticipated sequel to Kalki 2898 AD by Nag Ashwin, alongside Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan.
