Rumors have been circulating about Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, securing a nomination for the 2025 Oscars. This film, which stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Amitabh Bachchan, has garnered attention for its impressive box office and OTT success. It was recently speculated that Kalki 2898 AD was in contention for a nomination in the Best Visual Effects category at the Academy Awards. However, this information is not accurate.
The buzz surrounding the film’s potential nomination for Best VFX has been debunked. According to a list of possible Oscar contenders published by The Hollywood Reporter, Kalki 2898 AD did not make it to the first list of 26 movies that could be considered for the awards. Additionally, the official list of Oscar nominees will not be released until December 2024, so no final decisions have been made yet regarding the film’s chances.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Kalki 2898 AD has been associated with Oscar speculation. The film was also mentioned as a contender for the 97th Academy Awards but ultimately lost out to another film, Laapata Ladies. Despite the rumors, Kalki 2898 AD has still achieved significant milestones. By August 2024, it had grossed approximately Rs. 980 crores worldwide, becoming one of India’s highest-grossing films.
The film’s success can largely be attributed to Prabhas’ star power, but the performances of Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Amitabh Bachchan also contributed to its appeal. Following its theatrical release on June 27, 2024, Kalki 2898 AD was also made available on multiple OTT platforms, including Amazon Prime for the regional versions and Netflix for the Hindi version. Despite the Oscar rumors, the film’s achievements remain noteworthy.
