Justin McCauley, who was accused of threatening President Biden and Elon Musk, has been released from jail. He claims he went a little crazy, and it wasn’t what it seemed. He told his side of the story.
McCauley, a former Tesla engineer, attributes his actions to the adverse effects of abruptly stopping his antidepressant medication, a decision driven by a New Year’s resolution. However, his decision led him down a path fraught with confusion, culminating in threats against prominent figures and his subsequent arrest.
In his own words, McCauley described the tumultuous effects of withdrawing from his medication. He experienced alarming symptoms like blurred vision, auditory hallucinations, and paranoia. These side effects triggered erratic behavior, including posting threatening messages online directed at President Biden, Elon Musk, and other notable individuals. While McCauley admits to using alarming language, he insists that his intention was to seek attention rather than carry out any violent actions.
His journey took an unexpected turn when he embarked on a trip to Texas from his home in Minnesota. McCauley’s initial motivation was to ascertain whether his mental state was deteriorating or if there was indeed a crisis at the border. Along the way, he encountered a homeless man and, in a compassionate act, provided him with clothing and essentials with the aim of helping him secure employment at Tesla.
However, McCauley’s plans were disrupted when law enforcement intervened. During a traffic stop in Oklahoma, he expressed a desire to speak with the president, citing impending mortality as his rationale. Subsequently, McCauley was apprehended by Travis County Sheriff’s Deputies in Texas, charged with making terroristic threats, and incarcerated.
Reflecting on his ordeal, McCauley acknowledges the gravity of his actions and attributes them to his compromised mental state. He expresses remorse for the distress he caused and laments the loss of his job at Tesla.
