Jr NTR calls South cinema chaotic
Jr NTR is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated film Devara: Part 1, which is set to hit theaters on September 27, 2024. This film marks his first solo pan-India release after a gap of six years. During a recent promotional event, Jr NTR spoke openly about the differences he noticed between working in South Indian films and Bollywood, offering some honest insights into the work culture in both industries.
At a cross-promotional event for Devara and Alia Bhatt’s film Jigra, Jr NTR was in conversation with Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt. He reflected on how South Indian films are typically made in a chaotic manner. According to him, while the actors and crew members give their best performances, there often isn’t a clear plan guiding the entire process. He elaborated that South Indian sets often run on last-minute changes and unpredictable schedules.
Jr NTR explained, “Too much preparation takes away the chance to explore new things. In South Indian films, things are usually chaotic. For example, even if the final prints of the movie are supposed to be ready tomorrow, the team might still ask for extra time to make changes. Everyone is working under pressure to finish things, but adjustments are still being made right up until the last moment.”
He also mentioned how South Indian filmmakers and crews often don’t prepare extensively for the day’s shooting in advance. Instead, they sometimes spend time relaxing before diving into the chaotic work process. Interestingly, Jr NTR noted that despite the lack of structure, actors in South Indian films often perform better under these high-pressure, last-minute situations.
Switching to his experience in Bollywood, Jr NTR discussed what it was like working on his debut Hindi film War 2, where he stars alongside Hrithik Roshan. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the movie introduced Jr NTR to a very different working style compared to what he was used to in the South.

He shared that Ayan Mukerji, known for his love for detailed planning and preparation, was surprised by Jr NTR’s approach to acting. Jr NTR explained that his style is based on instinct rather than careful preparation. “When I was shooting for War 2, Ayan didn’t know what to expect. He wanted to bring out the best in me, but I rely on my instincts. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, something will come,’” Jr NTR said. He admitted that this was challenging for the director, who was used to structured work, but producer Aditya Chopra reassured them both that everything would work out.
