Israel approves Gaza ceasefire: Hostages to be freed

Israel’s cabinet recently approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas, marking a potential breakthrough in the 15-month-long conflict in Gaza. The agreement promises the release of numerous hostages held by Hamas and aims to ease the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Though the ceasefire was initially announced by Qatar and the United States, its implementation faced delays. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited last-minute challenges in negotiations. The ceasefire, set to begin Sunday will initiate the release of 33 hostages over six weeks though uncertainty surrounds their identities and safety.

In an exceptional move, Israel’s cabinet convened during the Jewish Sabbath to finalize the agreement, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Netanyahu has directed a team to prepare for the return of hostages and coordinate with affected families.

The deal includes the release of Palestinian detainees, mostly women and youth, along with increased humanitarian aid for Gaza. Israel’s justice ministry confirmed that 95 Palestinian prisoners would be freed in the first phase. To avoid public celebrations, Israeli authorities will oversee the transfer of prisoners instead of the Red Cross.

On the ground, aid convoys are ready at Egypt’s Rafah crossing to deliver supplies to Gaza. Israeli forces are set to withdraw from key areas allowing displaced Palestinians to return home though access to areas near the border remains restricted for security reasons.

The conflict which began in October 2023, has caused over 46,000 Palestinian casualties with women and children making up more than half. This ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope amid the devastation though challenges persist.
