I am mesmerised by cinema: Gehnna Sippyy

She is tall, fair, pretty and has lovely and expressive eyes. The young beauty from Mumbai is raring to go; she will be making her debut with Chor Bazaar shortly. The film is directed by Jeevan Reddy of George Reddy fame and stars Aakash Puri. Gehnna Sippyy is just 21 and has all the qualities to be a star, She just needs to have patience and a prayer on her lips as she is about to begin her career. Born and brought up in Mumbai, she lives with her parents and sister. When was she told she was pretty and should try her hand at films? “I have always been dramatic with the way I talk, also watched television, fond of dancing and dressing up. So probably people assumed I was interested in acting. Nothing influenced or motivated me to be an actor. I was 8 year old and in 2008..I told my parents I want to be an actor and want to be on television..which I meant was the screen. Any kid at that age would express and just talk and none would believe him or her. I just said it. I remember my tuition teachers, my parents being amused as all my English essays would be about my desire to act and that I am soon going to be an actor. I was never interested in math, science..I was neither a bad student nor a great one. My interest was in extra curricular activities, be it school plays, dancing. I put my energy and attention there. I wasn’t influenced, it came from within. My dad is so fond of the industry, he is into production and has knowledge of film making. I am no where connected to anyone from the industry but dad from school days worked in the production and worked as AD. I was watching films and dancing to Bollywood songs and cinema always mesmerised me. It was always on the top of my list.”

She continues, “I was 16 or 17 year old and as soon as schooling was done, I knew I would be into acting. I started off as a part time dance teacher, got pocket money from that and began auditioning. People reach out to you when they like your profile and that is what has happened. I watched a south film, and was in awe of it…it was Geeta Govindam. I also saw many Telugu films and there is a huge list on my phone. Even before signing a Telugu film, I watched many from the language and enjoyed the music. Before coming to Hyderabad, I saw many films like Mahanati, Ishq etc. In Mumbai, you’ll see a lot of people humming Ooantava or Saami Saami. When you have the interest and love for a particular thing, you will put all your effort into it. This is my only option, there is no plan B. My parents saw me grow up and I want to become an actor. I have a lot of support from them. I am hoping for the best and hope the audience loves my work.”

Gehnna never wished for a Bollywood launch as such, she was not specific or particular about the North and South languages. All she wanted was to make her debut with a nice story. She terms the South people as someone who are very nice and give respect. The work had also been amazing. She says as a matter of fact, “I believe in a lot of energies, mindset, vibrations. My interest lies in watching films, learning languages, humming songs and many such things. So far I have gone with the flow, my pictures were liked by directors down South. The first time I came here was in 2020 and people just knew me. The year 2021..I began shooting. I have done another film with Sudigali Sudheer, that was actually my first project.” How did she meet Jeevan Reddy? “That was during the making of George Reddy. I never had a hint that I would be called for the next film to be made by him. I just auditioned and a few days later I was confirmed for Chor Bazaar. Every person who worked in Chor Bazaar has done a commendable job and the audience will remember them for that,” she quips.

At 21, Gehnna Sippyy made it on her own. She auditioned with the pocket money she made by teaching dance. Kept herself busy by being fit, positive and her interest developed gradually. She agrees that being a star or an artiste is not a simple thing, a lot of hard work goes into being in that position physically and mentally. She observes, “There is another level of comfort and positivity in being an actor but outsiders think that things come easily which isn’t true. People look at the good aspect of cinema and don’t realise the efforts the artistes put to realise the vision of the director. It is a very tough job, late hours of work, early hours of starting work, dieting, no sleep can put you in utter discomfort. Finally, being on set gives you a high. The work outs, the diet..you have to put in a lot of it to be what you are today and want to be tomorrow. When I am shooting it is very hectic, if I have time I exercise. If I don’t have time, I sleep because I need to reach the sets early. Sometimes I go there even before the generator comes. I quickly freshen up and meditate a little, mentally prepare myself for the entire day..shoot and enjoy my lunch break. Later in the evening, I remove my makeup, do a skin care regimen, then have an early dinner and sleep. I am not a party hopper and prefer sleeping early and waking up early.” Gehna stresses the importance of being disciplined and says consistency is not possible without discipline. It is the root and you feel so proud of yourself if you are strong willed. When I want to eat a piece of cake, I think of discipline. When I am not too hard on myself, I do eat. I eat those tea cakes which don’t have sweet and cream, they are mild.”…Y.Sunita Chowdhary
