HYDRAA bold move: 262 illegal constructions removed across 23 areas
The Hyderabad Disaster Response-Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is taking strict action against illegal encroachments on lakes within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. In a recent report submitted to the government, HYDRAA stated that it demolished 262 illegal structures across 23 areas, reclaiming around 111.72 acres of land in the last two months. This marks a significant effort to protect lakes and ponds in the city from unauthorized construction.
Over the past two months, HYDRAA has been working on demolishing buildings that were illegally built on Full Tank Levels (FTL) and Buffer Zones of lakes. For example, three illegal buildings were taken down on Manemma Street (Ramnagar), 14 in Gagan Pahad, 24 near Ameenpur Lake, 42 near Sunnam Cheruvu Lake in Madhapur, and 13 near Kathva Lake in Dundigal.
Among these areas, Ameenpur Lake experienced the highest number of encroachments, with 51 acres of land being illegally occupied. Additionally, HYDRAA reclaimed 10 acres of land around Sunnam Cheruvu in Madhapur. The agency’s work is expected to continue at a rapid pace as it recently received its own dedicated police station, further strengthening its efforts to prevent illegal activities.

In response to these developments, the government is also considering the introduction of a new rule that would require builders to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from HYDRAA before constructing any new buildings near lakes or water bodies. This move aims to protect these crucial environmental zones from future encroachment and illegal construction.
HYDRAA’s actions show the government’s dedication to preserving the city’s water bodies and protecting them from further degradation. The establishment of the new police station is expected to improve the enforcement of these measures, ensuring stricter compliance with the law.
