The demolition of actor Nagarjuna’s N-Convention center in Hyderabad has become a hot topic across Telangana. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) carried out the demolition, citing that the structure was built on encroached land within the Full Tank Level (FTL) zone of Thammikunta Lake in Madhapur.
Nagarjuna defended the construction, claiming that the land was patta land, making the demolition unlawful. However, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath firmly stated that no permissions were ever granted to build N-Convention. According to Ranganath, the entire structure fell within the FTL zone, making it an unauthorized construction.
The controversy dates back to 2014 when the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued a notice to halt the construction of N-Convention. The owners challenged this notice in the High Court, leading to a court-ordered survey in the presence of the owners. The survey confirmed the encroachment, resulting in a second notice verifying the violation.
Over the years, the N-Convention owners made several attempts to regularize the structure under the Building Regularisation Scheme (BRS), but failed to secure approval. Ranganath clarified that while patta land could be granted, it is intended for agricultural purposes, not for building commercial structures like N-Convention. Despite ongoing legal battles, the demolition was executed, raising questions about land use regulations and accountability in urban development.
