How many HMPV cases are reported in India?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in Bengaluru, India. Two infants were affected by this virus. A 3-month-old girl was diagnosed with HMPV at Baptist Hospital. She had bronchopneumonia but was discharged after treatment. An 8-month-old boy was also admitted to the same hospital. He tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025. He is now recovering.
The government confirmed that neither child had a history of international travel. Health officials said the test results came from a private hospital. They trust the reports from the hospital. Previously, the state health department stated no HMPV cases were detected in Karnataka. However, this is now the first confirmed case.
Experts advise against panic. HMPV is not a new virus. It is already present in many countries, including India. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao clarified that this virus is not unusual. He mentioned that China reported a new variant of HMPV. More information is needed to understand the current situation.

What is HMPV?
HMPV is a respiratory virus. It mainly affects the lungs and airways. This virus was first identified in 2001. It is related to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It can infect people of all ages. Infants, the elderly, and those with weak immunity are at higher risk. The virus spreads through coughs, sneezes, or contact with contaminated surfaces.
In infants, HMPV symptoms may include fever, cough, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases may lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Parents should watch for signs of breathing problems. Bluish lips or extreme tiredness require immediate medical care. Early treatment is important.
The central government has stated that HMPV is already circulating worldwide. Current data does not show an unusual increase in respiratory illnesses in India. Most HMPV cases are mild. Symptoms like cough, cold, and fever are common and can be treated at home. Only a few cases require hospitalization.
Health authorities in Delhi and other regions have issued guidelines. Hospitals are monitoring respiratory illnesses to stay prepared.
