Home Minister’s apology: A positive step in politics ?
In a noteworthy event in Andhra Pradesh’s Legislative Council, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha apologized during a heated discussion setting a rare but commendable example in politics. The YSR Congress with its majority in the Council, often wields its strength to dominate proceedings. However this time, it faced a unique situation.
Leader of the Opposition Botsa Satyanarayana questioned the state’s law and order situation. Responding to this Home Minister Anitha gave a detailed answer, which Botsa claimed was politically charged rather than direct. The opposition leader even threatened a walkout accusing the Minister of making baseless allegations.
Anitha, in turn urged the opposition to remain and listen to her explanation instead of resorting to dramatic exits. However Council Chairman Moshen Raju objected to the Minister’s choice of words such as “దమ్ము” and “ధైర్యం” (strength and courage) deeming them inappropriate for her position.
Without hesitation Anitha apologized and withdrew her remarks. This act stands in sharp contrast to instances where political leaders refuse to apologize for offensive statements even when they cross boundaries.
This incident marks a significant cultural shift in politics. Apologies and accountability are rare in today’s political landscape where confrontations and blame games dominate. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its leader Chandrababu Naidu deserve credit for fostering this positive approach.
By owning her mistake, Anitha has shown that political leadership is about responsibility and respect not just power.
