Govt to change mobile number format Mobile number

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is making significant changes to the mobile numbering system for the first time in 21 years. The new plan might increase the length of mobile numbers from the current 10 digits to 11 or even 13 digits.

Due to the introduction of the 5G network and the growing number of mobile users, TRAI sees a need to update the National Numbering Plan. The last major update was in 2003. The rapid increase in mobile subscribers and services has created a challenge for mobile companies to manage and allocate numbers efficiently.

In 2003, numbering resources were allocated for 750 million telephone connections across India. Over the past 21 years, this system has faced strain due to the continuous increase in the number of connections. As of March 31, the number of telephone subscribers in India has surged by about 85 percent.

To address this issue, TRAI has updated its website and invited public feedback on the proposed changes to the numbering plan. People can submit their suggestions in writing. The new plan aims to expand the mobile number length from 10 digits to between 11 and 13 digits which will help accommodate the growing number of users and improve identification.

This change is expected to help manage the increasing demand for mobile connections and improve the efficiency of telecommunications in India.
