Ghani Movie Review

Allu Bobby has turned producer with the film Ghani. Starring Varun Tej, the film is out in the open. Read on to see if the film has any juice in it or not.

Plot

Ghani’s(Varun Tej) father(Upendra) is a tainted boxer who passes away due to a drug overdose. Due to this reason, Ghani’s mother keeps him away from boxing. But Ghani secretly trains to become a boxer and contests the state championship. But his dreaded past comes haunting back and he loses the title. This is the time he grabs his life back again and approaches a former boxer(Sunil Shetty) to train him. The basic crux is how Ghani trains hard and reaches his goal.

Performances

Varun Tej plays the role of a boxer and he has learned the tricks of the trade. Due to his solid build, he looks appealing as a boxer. The way he builds his body in the second half is also good. In emotional scenes too, he creates an impact. Saiee Manjrekar is okay until she lasts. She has the looks but is wasted in the second half of the film.

Jagapathi Babu is getting repetitive in all his roles as a baddie. Tollywood needs to think beyond him now. Upendra is just about okay but does not create the needed impact. Apart from Varun, Sunil Shetty is the one who shines as he is shown so decently by Kiran. He also plays the supporting role nicely. Nadia sleep walks in her role and her character does not create much depth.

Analysis

The core element of any sports drama is the strong emotion that drives the film. But sadly in Ghani, the emotions do not get elevated. The basic drive with which the story needs to go ahead has no impact on the audience. As sports dramas are a dime and dozen these days, Ghani needed the novelty factor but that was missing here completely.

What keeps you ticked is the sincere performance of Varun Tej. Thaman adds some depth to the film with his good BGM. His songs do not create that kind of an impact which was expected. The entire first half is pale as the director did not have much to showcase. Even after having so much scope to add romance and comedy, he misses out.

The interval point is good and gives a sigh of relief. Once the second half starts, the flashback is brought in and things look good. The boxing matches and climax are predictable but handled in a decent manner. The boxing style and set up looks authentic and credit should go to the production design.

In the end, Ghani has more action than drama. Even if the director had a routine storyline, he could have added more emotions and made the film intense. But that is not that case and Ghani ends up in a been there done that kind of a scenario.

Bottom Line – Been there done that
