Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy took a significant step on Tuesday, March 12, by announcing a financial aid of Rs 20 lakh as ex-gratia to the family of Geetanjali, a victim of alleged online harassment. The 32-year-old resident of Sharab Bazar in Tenali tragically ended her life on March 7, succumbing to her injuries four days later.
Expressing his firm commitment to upholding the dignity and honor of individuals, especially women, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy reiterated his administration’s unwavering stance against those who engage in disrespectful behavior. He emphasized that stringent legal action would be taken against anyone found violating these principles.
Geetanjali’s demise, attributed to online harassment, has sparked political unrest in Andhra Pradesh, given her association with the ruling YSRCP Government and her recent involvement in the Jagananna Housing Scheme. As a beneficiary of this government initiative and a vocal supporter of CM Jagan Mohan Reddy, Geetanjali’s tragic end has raised concerns and garnered attention across the state.
Belonging to the Viswabrahmin community, Geetanjali had received a plot of land under the Jagananna Housing Scheme, a move she lauded as the fulfillment of her dreams by the CM’s administration. In her appreciation, she publicly expressed her intention to vote for the YSRCP in the upcoming elections, citing the government’s various welfare programs that had significantly benefited her family.
However, following her public endorsement, Geetanjali faced a barrage of disparaging remarks and online abuse from individuals associated with opposition troll pages and supporters of rival political parties, highlighting the toxicity of online discourse and its detrimental impact on vulnerable individuals.
CM Jagan Mohan Reddy’s swift response in extending financial support to Geetanjali’s family underscores the government’s commitment to justice and accountability in cases of online harassment and cyberbullying. As the investigation into Geetanjali’s tragic death continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stricter regulations and measures to combat online abuse and protect individuals’ mental well-being.
