Flop Tamil movies that became hits after re-release
In recent years, the trend of re-releasing old movies has become popular in the film industry. Initially, movies were re-released only on the birthdays of top stars. However, some films that failed during their original release but later gained popularity through social media were also brought back to theaters. Surprisingly, many of these movies performed well upon re-release. Here are some Tamil movies that turned into hits after getting a second chance.
Yuganiki Okkadu (Aayirathil Oruvan)
This historical adventure film was released in 2010. At the time, audiences found it difficult to understand, leading to its failure at the box office. However, over time, discussions on social media increased interest in the film. Fans started demanding its re-release, believing it deserved another chance. In December 2020, the film was re-released in Tamil Nadu and received a great response, collecting over ₹1.5 crore.
3 Movie
Directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and starring Dhanush, 3 was released in 2012 with high expectations. The song Why This Kolaveri Di became a global sensation before the movie’s release. However, the film failed to meet audience expectations and did not perform well. After nearly 13 years, it was re-released in Telugu, where it earned more than ₹2 crore. Later, its Tamil re-release also collected around ₹1.5 crore.
Baba
Superstar Rajinikanth’s Baba (2002) is considered one of his biggest flops. Directed by Suresh Krissna, the film had strong political undertones, as Rajinikanth was rumored to be entering politics at that time. However, audiences were disappointed, and the film collected only ₹1 crore initially. In 2023, on Rajinikanth’s birthday, Baba was re-released with a modified climax. This time, the film received a fantastic response, collecting ₹1.4 crore on the first day alone.
Aalavandhan (Abhay)
Kamal Haasan’s Aalavandhan (2001) was a psychological thriller where he played a dual role. The complex storyline confused audiences, leading to its failure. However, after 22 years, the film was re-released in nearly 1,000 theaters and managed to collect ₹1 crore, proving its timeless appeal.
These films show that even flops can turn into hits when given a second chance.
