The much-hyped visual grandeur of Samantha’s ‘Shakunthalam’ is frightening producers as well as fans. Going by the first day collections, the film earned Rs 4.70 crore gross whereas the overall share for the first day is pegged at Rs 2.22 crore. This is usually a decent figure on the first day for small-budget films.
But for ‘Shaakuntalam’ which created a stir on social media with large-scale publicity as pan Indian film, the numbers are very unsatisfactory.
Half of the revenue received is from both the Telugu states. But the biggest relief for the makers is from the advance bookings. It collected up to Rs 70 Lakhs in the overseas market. But going by the mixed reviews of the film, it is unlikely to recover money from audiences, unless any wonder takes place during this weekend.
The theatrical rights of ‘Shaakuntalam’ were sold for Rs 18 crores. That means it needs another one crore to break even. But given the circumstances, this is highly impossible. Because in order to meet the expectations, a 10-day strong run is required.
Now, the wave is against ‘Shaakuntalam’, and makers have no option left to tide over the situation. Imagine, if they hold success meets or celebrity interviews at this juncture, nothing great would fetch. Moreover, the ticket prices at multiplexes (Rs 295 rupees and an additional 35 rupees 3D charges) are a big burden for middle-class audiences.
