Several talented female directors made their mark in Tollywood with great movies. Directors like Vijaya Nirmala and Nandini Reddy delivered successful films. However, another female director tried her hand at direction with a remake in Tollywood but faced failure.
Comedy actor Sampoornesh Babu usually attracts attention with his films, but his latest movie Martin Luther King didn’t do well after its release last Friday. The choice of title and lack of promotion seemed to be the main reasons for its poor performance.
Martin Luther King is a remake of the Tamil film “Mandela.” It’s a bold and humorous political satire directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, who transitioned from being an IAS aspirant to a filmmaker. Even with changes made by the director Venkatesh Maha to suit the local audience, the film couldn’t cover its expenses.
As the film faced the possibility of being a major flop, the director made desperate attempts to grab the attention of celebrities and moviegoers. She reached out to politicians, business leaders, and film stars, requesting their support for her film.
Initially, Puja claimed that her movie deserved applause from all quarters, but she didn’t mention that it was a remake. When people criticized her for not giving credit to the original director, she defended herself by saying that remakes are common in the current era and showed respect to the Tamil director.
Despite her efforts on social media to gain attention from the film industry and political figures, Martin Luther King didn’t receive the desired recognition, and all her attempts were in vain.
