The upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh have caused a ripple effect in the Tollywood film industry. With the release schedule out, one notable casualty is Viswak Sen’s Gangs of Godavari, which has been postponed. As summer holidays approach, the anticipation for new movie releases usually runs high. However, this year seems different as only two films have been confirmed so far – Vijay Devarakonda’s Family Star and Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD.
Vijay Devarakonda, known for his hit film Geetha Govindam, is teaming up once again with director Parasuram for Family Star, slated for release on April 5th. Interestingly, this date was initially reserved for Jr NTR’s film, but due to VFX delays, Vijay seized the opportunity.
Looking ahead to May, the prime slot coinciding with summer vacations, Prabhas’s Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, is set to hit screens on May 9th. This release date holds sentimental significance for Vyjayanthi Movies, given the success of their previous May releases, Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari and Mahanati.
Despite these exciting prospects, the absence of other movie announcements raises questions about filmmakers’ reluctance to compete with Prabhas or their failure to secure favorable release dates. The high-budget production and star-studded cast of Kalki 2898 AD have heightened anticipation among movie buffs, further intensifying curiosity about the summer lineup.
Unless more films are announced soon, Tollywood could experience a drought of new releases this summer, with only two confirmed movies on the horizon. Additionally, it’s evident that apart from Prabhas, no other star hero has shown the courage to step into the political arena, further emphasizing his unique position in the industry.
