Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX a father to 12 children. These children were born to three different mothers: Justine Wilson, Grimes, and Shivon Zilis. Below, we detail what is publicly known about each of them.
With Justine Wilson
Nevada Alexander Musk- Nevada was Musk’s first child with Justine Wilson. Tragically, he passed away at just 10 weeks old in 2002 due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Griffin and Vivian Jenna Wilson- Born in 2004, Griffin and Vivian are twins conceived through IVF. Originally named Xavier, Vivian transitioned and changed her name upon reaching adulthood. She also legally dropped the Musk surname.
Kai, Saxon, and Damian Musk– These triplets were born in 2006, also via IVF. Musk and Wilson raised them together until their divorce in 2008.
With Grimes (Claire Boucher)
X Æ A-Xii Musk– Born in May 2020, this child, whose name is pronounced “X Ash A Twelve,” is Musk’s first son with the musician Grimes. His original name, X Æ A-12 had to be altered slightly to comply with California law regarding birth certificate naming.
Exa Dark Sideræl Musk– In December 2021, Musk and Grimes welcomed a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, pronounced “Sigh-deer-ee-el,” via surrogate. The parents often refer to her by her nickname, “Y.”
Techno Mechanicus Musk– Also known as Tau, Techno Mechanicus is the third child of Musk and Grimes. The details about his birth date and other specifics remain private but his existence was later confirmed by Musk.
With Shivon Zilis
Strider and Azure Musk– In November 2021, Musk and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis had twins named Strider and Azure through IVF. This was not initially publicized but later Musk confirmed their birth.
Unnamed Newborn– Earlier in 2024, Musk and Zilis welcomed their third child together. The name and gender of this child have not yet been revealed. Musk has stated that all friends and family were aware of this birth and it was not meant to be a secret.
Musk’s Relationships
Elon Musk’s personal life especially regarding his children, has often been a subject of public interest. He and Justine Wilson divorced in 2008, but their five children together remain an integral part of Musk’s life. Post-divorce, Musk married actress Talulah Riley in 2010. The couple had a tumultuous relationship marked by a divorce in 2012, remarriage in 2013 and a final divorce in 2016 but they did not have any children together.
Musk’s relationship with Grimes has also been widely followed by the media. They started dating in 2018 and have had an on-and-off relationship culminating in the birth of their three children. Despite their separations, they have continued to co-parent.
In recent years, Musk’s relationship with Shivon Zilis, an executive at one of his companies has come to light with the birth of their twins and their third child. Their children were conceived through IVF, a method Musk has previously utilized.
