The trend of re-releasing old movies is gaining popularity across Indian film industries, including Telugu and Tamil. Many star hero films are being digitally remastered with improved sound technology like DTS and Dolby Atmos and presented in 4K or 8K resolution. These re-releases often cost less than ₹50 lakh but manage to earn several crores at the box office.

One such surprising success story is the Hindi movie Sanam Teri Kasam. When it was first released in 2016, it was a box-office failure, collecting only ₹7 crores against a ₹15 crore budget. However in a shocking turnaround, the movie was re-released on February 7, 2025 and quickly became a blockbuster. The romantic drama, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane resonated strongly with audiences the second time around.

Within its first week, Sanam Teri Kasam collected ₹30.67 crores, with ₹5.14 crores on its opening day and ₹9.5 crores on the second day. As of now, the film has surpassed ₹50 crores, leaving critics, analysts, and filmmakers amazed. Despite competition from major Hollywood releases like Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the film continues to attract audiences, proving that some movies find success with time.

This unexpected box-office revival has sparked discussions in the film industry. Experts believe that factors like nostalgia, improved marketing and a fresh audience can transform past flops into massive hits. Many filmmakers are now reconsidering re-releasing films that initially underperformed, hoping to replicate this success.

With Sanam Teri Kasam continuing to rake in profits, industry insiders are eager to see if more old films will follow this trend and create similar box-office magic.
